Local News

Inspiring fundraiser Sophia, seven, helps Acorns

A seven-year-old Black Country girl who wanted to stop her friend from feeling sad over her baby sister’s life-threatening condition created her own charity to help Acorns Children's Hospice.

Sophia White heard that baby Isla Groom, the sister of her friend Sian Groom, had been admitted for end-of-life care at Acorns in the Black Country.

Sophia inspired teachers and children at Great Bridge Primary School by using jam jars to collect pennies in her ‘Penny Pots’ fundraiser, which brought £50 in vital funds to help provide care at Acorns.

Her mum Claire Groom, of Tipton, said:  “We were overwhelmed at what Sophia had done.  She is so caring – she is an inspiration.  Now her church is supporting Acorns, and lots of other people who have heard are raising funds for the hospice.

Innovation Module a Success!

Students at Wolverhampton University were really put to the test during their recent Business Module.  Groups had to come up with the most creative way to raise money for charity helping to train social entrepreneurs of the future. Paintballing, rock evenings and sponsored walks dressed as the tele tubbies are just a few of the ideas that raised the cash.  After exhibiting their work in the final stage of the module Acorns received a fantastic donation of £2694.23

Martin Dunn, who caught the biggest fish at Barratt Homes fishing match for AcornsBarratt Homes Fishing Match

Award-winning housebuilder Barratt Homes recently held a charity fishing match at the Woodland View fishery in Droitwich. The event saw a turn out of 42 people, including many of the firm's suppliers and contractors, and raised a total of £8,015 for Acorns Children’s Hospice. The winner of the match was, Martin Dunn, who caught 100lb7oz fish! To top it off, due to the success of the charity fishing match, Barratt West Midlands have decided to make it an annual event. A big thank you to Barratt homes for their fundraising efforts!

Support Groups in Walsall/Sandwell Needed

We are appealing for friends and colleagues of Acorns in the Walsall/Sandwell area to set up support groups to help local fundraising activities in the community. These will help people to combine social interests and activities with fundraising, as a fun way to show support and strive towards our common goal. Best of all, you can start one up with just three or four of your friends!

Community Fundraising Manager for the Black Country, Hannah Nolan, said “Many groups in the region hold small scale social events such as coffee mornings, quiz nights, raffles and karaokes. Others do sponsored walks, weight loss challenges and fancy dress cycles. There is no minimum commitment, some groups meet once a week, others meet monthly or quarterly to organise larger events such as balls or fetes. It really is up to you!"

Volunteering Opportunities

Action Team Volunteer
Join our Action Team and volunteer at a time and place to suit you! This role offers great variety and flexibility, enabling you to choose how, when and where to volunteer without needing to commit to a regular time or role. If you can give an hour or two every now and then, this is the role for you!

Event Representative
We are looking for outgoing, friendly people to represent Acorns at local fundraising events, thanking supporters, collecting donations, presenting certificates, drawing raffle tickets and giving out information.

Event Speaker
Confident public speakers are needed to represent Acorns locally. We won’t teach you how to be a public speaker but we will provide you with all of the information you need to be able to talk with conviction about Acorns, generating awareness and encouraging others to fundraise.

Collection Tin Co-ordinator
Looking after the collection tins in your local area - replacing full tins, keeping records and asking local businesses to have a tin will generate valuable donations for Acorns.
