Shoppers flocked to Acorns’ newest store as the Mayor of Ledbury Councillor Allan Conway cut the ribbon to open its doors on Saturday (February 4).
Town Crier Bill ‘the Bell’ Turberfield rang out to officially welcome townspeople to the store, which has a vital role in helping Acorns Children’s Hospice to care for life limited Hereford children and their families.
Staff had a busy afternoon as shoppers snapped up lots of bargains, and Acorns’ manager Wendy Webb is now urgently appealing for donations of stock to continue their support for the hospice in Worcester.
Acorns’ area retail manager Val Hammonds said: “We gave local shoppers a big welcome with super bargains, and were delighted with the support.”
Acorns relies for the majority of its income on the support of the local community. Goods for donation can be brought to the shop from 9 – 5 pm during opening hours to the Ledbury store, which is Acorns’ 52nd store in the West Midlands.
Acorns cares for 213 life limited children in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Families use the services free, but it does cost £750 per day for each child’s care.

Notes to editors:
Due to the sensitive nature of Acorns care services it refrains from using the words ‘terminal’ or ‘terminally ill’ in its press releases and public communications when describing the children who use Acorns and the conditions that they have. Instead, Acorns uses the words ‘life limited’, ‘life limiting’, or ‘life threatening’ – terms that are used by medical experts at the point of diagnosis of the child, and which are commonly used in the UK’s children’s hospice movement and paediatric palliative care communications. Acorns kindly requests that you respect this in your own press coverage of Acorns Children’s Hospice. Acorns children have a lot of living to do. Thank you.
Acorns offers a network of care and support to children who have life limiting or life threatening conditions and their families, at its hospices in Selly Oak, Walsall and Worcester, and through its community team who offer support at home. Children can stay at the hospices for short breaks, emergency and end-of-life care. The community team give support to the family 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Acorns has developed in size and expertise, and led nationally and internationally toward the immensely important goal of giving life limited children and their families the best possible care.
Since its opening in 1988, Acorns’ reputation has been built on quality of care, and attention to detail – where the whole family is supported, reflecting the Palliative Care Network’s vision towards ‘Living well to the end of life.’
