Overview

There are lots of reasons for choosing volunteering - you might be surprised by just how many different reasons there can be:

Making New Friends:
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.  It’s easy to find things to talk about when you are all there to work together for a common purpose.  Volunteers often comment on the enjoyment they get from being part of a team.

Building Confidence:
Some people, for any number of reasons, have not been taking an active part in life outside their own homes for a time.  Volunteering is a safe and gentle way for people to re-introduce them into society and can be a lead into a return to paid employment.

Influences Career Choices:
Working as a volunteer can provide a useful opportunity to ‘sample’ different types of work helping you to understand what motivates you and where your skills lie.

Developing New Skills:
Everyone who volunteers brings their own unique skills and experience with them.  These are of enormous benefit to the organisation.  However, volunteers also have the opportunity to develop a range of new skills if they choose to.

Experience Diversity:
Working as a volunteer offers the opportunity to interact with people from many different cultural and professional backgrounds.

Improve Your Health:
The writer Allan Luks, in ‘The Healing Power of Doing Good’, found ‘medical and scientific documentation supporting the healthy benefits of volunteering’.  One of these benefits was a heightened sense of well-being.

Make a Difference:
The main motivation for many volunteers is the desire to feel they are ‘giving something back’.  This may be a very general sense of wanting to contribute in recognition of their own good health or good fortune.  It may also be in recognition of the support they or someone they care about has received from a specific organisation.

It’s Fun!
All the other reasons listed above may be why people begin their volunteering experiences, but this is the one that keeps them with us!
