Make a Will Month
Local law firms across the region are offering a FREE basic will writing service during October to raise funds for Acorns Children’s Hospice, so we can continue to provide vital care for a child like Arthur.
What is Make a Will Month?
Every year law firms around the UK take part in make a will month to try to raise awareness of the importance of making a will.
In order to do this, they offer to draw up wills at a reduced rate throughout the month while at the same time supporting their chosen charities.
"Like many people, my husband and I put off making a will, although we did talk about it from time to time.
The process itself was very straightforward and not nearly as complicated as we first thought." Anne

Like many people, my husband and I put off making a will, although we did talk about it from time to time.
Make a Will month came along and that galvanised us into action. We actually made the decision to go for it.
We have two teenage children who were approaching the age of leaving home, so we wanted to make sure we are prepared for the future.
The process itself was very straightforward and not nearly as complicated as we first thought. We called to make an appointment which lasted about half an hour, the solicitor helped guide us through the legal jargon and language. We then went away and drafted our first copy.
The fact the money is going towards Acorns helped spur us on. We’re not only doing something which will benefit our family in the long term, but we are helping support the vital work of a local charity.
I’d say to anyone still not sure about making a will to go for it, don’t think about it, do it!
Although it's not an easy subject to talk about, making a will is important for many reasons
- Seeking professional advice to make a legally correct will helps loved ones to ensure that our wishes are properly taken into consideration once we have gone.
- A will can help to make sure that our estates are tax efficient.
- For unmarried couples, making a will is particularly important if you wish to leave a legacy for your partner.
Typically the fees associated with making a will are £100-200 for a basic single will and £150 - £300 for a basic joint will. Instead of paying your law firm this fee (which is FREE as part of our Make a Will Month) we’re asking if you would consider making a voluntary donation to Acorns, of £80 for a single will or £130 for a joint will. This could pay for vital care from a nurse for a child like Arthur.
Our specialist nurses provide care, support, fun and laughter for the children and young people who access our services. We rely on the local community to help fund the majority of our activities which is why your support can make a real difference.

What if there isn't a local law firm listed in my area?
Whilst we have tried ensure there are solicitors in Walsall, Worcester and Birmingham, we are unable to guarantee that the law firms will be based within close proximity to your local area. However Bequest Wills and Dunham McCarthy offer a home visit service across the region.
Why is the suggested voluntary donation £80 for a single Will and £130 for a joint Will?
The cost of a single Will is £100-200 and a joint Will is £200-300, however through this scheme you will be able to have a Will drawn up for FREE with one of our participating firms. Instead of paying their usual fee, we're asking if you would support Acorns by making a voluntary donation. The amounts suggested will help us to continue to provide our vital care services to local life limited or life threatened children.
Our specialist nurses have a variety of experience and come from a whole range of different backgrounds, such as general hospitals, community, intensive care units or schools to name a few. Here at Acorns they provide care, support, fun and laughter for the children and young people who access our services.
