At this time of year in particular, the multitude of care and support services we provide to children and families can be seen as a series of precious gifts.
Read our family stories below to see the variety of ways that we are there for families when they need it, whether it’s giving a family time to relax, or supporting them throughout their child’s life.
We have lot’s of festive christmas fundraising ideas for you to get involved in, with your support we can continue to make a real difference!
“Luca’s so vulnerable, he can catch the smallest thing like a cough and there’s a risk it could be life threatening. He’s had pneumonia, meningitis, everything you can think of, so you can’t help but feel on edge. I’ll always be aware of how precious he is, how something as simple as a common cold can be so serious, but Acorns always feels like a safe place where they really understand Luca and his condition.”
Faye, Luca’s mum
“We know that Zara has the same condition as her brother and it’s heart-breaking to think that we are going to experience the loss of another child. The pain of losing another child is unbearable but with the support of our friends at Acorns we’ll deal with that day when it comes, I don’t know how we would cope if we didn’t have that support.”
Amjid, Zara’s dad
“Acorns has always provided the best possible support for me and my family and they’ve done this in so many different ways.”
Rachel, Sibling and Young Ambassador
The gift of time
Alex, who has volunteered at Acorns in the Black Country for around 4 years, explains why befriending is so important to both him and the families who use our services.
“It’s a really special experience. Whether it’s making memories for the children or forming relationships with the families. If you’re befriending just use your imagination. It could be playing musical instruments or playing board games with them, using imaginative play and role play, taking them for walks round the garden, art activities, taking them to the sensory room, playing video games. You can talk to any of the nurse’s to find out what sort of things they like. It’s all about what the child wants to do.”
