Why do you volunteer?

We have a variety of volunteers from all walks of life helping us in a number of ways, and a range of volunteer opportunities available to donate your time to. Read below to see what volunteering for Acorns is all about in the words of our volunteers:

Gill EdwardsVolunteer role: Event Marshal

How long have you been volunteering at Acorns Children’s Hospice? 2 years.

Can you explain briefly what you do? First time marshalled on half marathon route. Second time at the finish line of the run.

What made you choose to volunteer at Acorns? Being a retired teacher, I have always valued and enjoyed children of all abilities – their effort and their courage. Also in my family we have a life limited very brave young boy.

What is your fondest memory of volunteering at Acorns? The atmosphere of run is amazing and often very moving. I can no longer run, and this is my way of helping. I love it.

RachelVolunteer role: Fundraising volunteer

How long have you been volunteering at Acorns Children’s Hospice? I have been volunteering for Acorns since 2006 doing lots of different things!

Can you explain briefly what you do? As a volunteer I do a wide range of things which include; bucket collections, organising events such as bingo nights and fashion shows, marshalling at events, counting money raised, ringing around company etc. to get raffle prizes and support, attending events to raise Acorns profile and participating in challenges myself. You name it I’ve probably done it!!

What made you choose to volunteer at Acorns? I chose Acorns as I wanted to raise money for a local children’s charity back in 2006 and Acorns is just that. I visited the hospice the first time and knew that I had made the right choice; I have carried on being involved since that day. When you meet the children and the staff you know your fundraising is making a difference.

What is your fondest memory of volunteering at Acorns? My fondest memory is of counting the money after organising a charity bingo night with Walsall Fundraising group and finding we had raised over £2000, an amount we never thought we would raise. It was amazing!
