Amazing Aimee’s Life is Transformed by ‘Incredible’ Technology

The life of a seven-year-old girl with cerebral palsy is being transformed thanks to ‘incredible’ technology donated to Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Aimee, who receives care and support from Acorns Black Country hospice, has been given greater independence thanks to the Eyegaze from Lifelites.

The equipment was donated to the hospice, in Walstead Road, Walsall, where Aimee benefits from respite stays and stay and play sessions.

The youngster, who requires the use of a wheelchair and is unable to speak, is now able to communicate using the Eyegaze, which senses eye movement, enabling Aimee to use a computer with just her eyes.

The difference this remarkable technology has made to Aimee’s life has been featured in Lifelites Annual Report.

Aimee’s mum Charlotte explained: “She loves playing games on there – her favourite is a custard pie game where she looks at a picture of a family member and splats it with a custard pie. It’s great at teaching her cause and effect.

“The most amazing thing about the Eyegaze by far is the power it’s given her to communicate, and one of the ways we use it is at dinner time. I ask her to look at either dinner or drink, and whichever one she looks at I give her, and she is starting to recognise that she’ll get a drink when she asks for one. It’s incredible to see her making that connection.

“She is still learning and has a long way to go but it’s incredible for her to have this opportunity. It has given her a chance to be proactive and make her own decisions in life. It’s given her a voice.

“I never thought this would be possible for Aimee but I hope that in the future she will be able to continue to make her own choices in everyday situations. Simple things like telling us when she needs to use the bathroom could make the world of difference.

“Knowing that Aimee can use the Lifelites Eyegaze when she is away from home is really comforting for us, I know that no matter where she is, she has the power to communicate and make her own decisions.

“There will also be other children at her hospice, and many other children’s hospices, who don’t have access to this equipment anywhere else, so it’s particularly important for them, and I just hope that they can enjoy the same benefits as Aimee. Thank you Lifelites!”

Lifelites donates specialist assistive technology packages to hospices across the UK – including Acorns Children’s Hospice – helping to over 10,000 children and young people with life limiting, life threatening and disabling conditions.
