Our range of complementary therapies

Massaging at Acorns

Indian head massage has developed from a long tradition in India to become a popular holistic massage for relaxation, stress relief and uplift. This massage treatment takes place whilst you are comfortably seated and fully clothed. It involves the scalp, face, neck, shoulders, upper arms and upper back, leaving you calm, balanced and relaxed. It can also help to relieve pain and stress.

Massage can promote relaxation and a general sense of well-being. It involves a rhythmical touch with movements varied to suit an individual’s needs. It can be used with or without oils or creams and can be applied to the whole body or a specific area. Gentle hand and foot massage given to the lower arms or lower legs and feet is soothing and comforting.

Baby/infant massage provides a special contact between parent and child encouraging confidence and security and providing time for bonding. Massage can also assist in relaxation and help alleviate symptoms such as colic.

Reflexology involves applying a gentle massage to the reflex areas on the feet. The gentle massage helps to promote balance and harmony within the body. It may also improve circulation and relaxation.

Complementary therapy is available at Acorns.

Aromatherapy uses essential plant oils. These have many therapeutic qualities which are said to restore the balance between body, mind and spirit. The oils have different aromas and may have different textures and colours. The essential oils are often mixed with neutral carrier oil to help absorption through the skin. They can be applied by gentle massage, or added to a warm bath.

The ’M’ technique (a method of touch for those too fragile for massage) – this is a method of touch developed for the very fragile or when massage is inappropriate. It is a series of stroking movements designed to promote a profound relaxing effect. The ‘M’ Technique can be performed fully clothed or in conjunction with aromatherapy.

Acupressure is a form of touch therapy that utilises the principles of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. In acupressure, the same points on the body are used as in acupuncture but are stimulated with finger pressure instead of the insertion of needles. Acupressure is used to relieve a variety of symptoms and pain.

Relaxation – the aim of these activities is to give babies, children and young people and their families an enjoyable experience using music, touch and sensory aids. The aim is to release muscle tension and quieten the mind.
