At Acorns Children’s Hospice our dedicated teams provide specialist palliative care for life limited and life threatened babies, children and young people and support for their families. This support is offered from our three hospices based in Worcester, Birmingham and Walsall, as well as within the family home and community.
We believe no family caring for a life limited or life threatened child should do it alone. Our families are our inspiration and the reason we exist, their local children’s hospice is both their lifeline and their home from home.
Our care is about offering choice. We know every family is different, that’s why we tailor their care, support and the services they can access to fit their individual needs. This is reflected in the family stories below. For Haniya’s family, support groups and making precious memories are what’s important, whereas for Charlie’s family short breaks are absolutely essential to give them respite from caring round the clock.
We provide a wide range of services, allowing us to give families the opportunity to choose their level of support. Find out more about our care for children and support for families.
It costs around £10 million a year to run our care services in the hospices and community, providing care for children and support for families. Of this £10 million, around 35% comes from Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and other statutory bodies, around £6.5 million comes from the generosity of fundraisers in our local community, and almost £2 million is generated by people like you shopping in and donating to our network of charity shops.
As you’ll be aware, our charity shops play a vital role in raising funds for Acorns Children’s Hospice. From pre-loved clothes, toys and bric-a-brac to books and DVDs, there are a whole host of high quality, used items waiting for you in your local charity shop within the heart of your community. In addition, our Chelmsley Wood furniture shop provides a treasure trove of preloved furniture and homeware.
Our shops can be found across Birmingham, the wider West Midlands and Three Counties – use our local shop map to find your nearest charity shop and get bargain hunting!
Interested in volunteering in one of our shops?
We are always looking for volunteers to help out with the day-to-day running of our local charity shops. It’s a rewarding role where you can gain work experience, learn new skills and meet new people, all whilst making a big difference to local children and families
When you donate items to an Acorns charity shop, please sign up for Retail Gift Aid if you are eligible.
Each donation is worth 25% more to Acorns under the government’s Gift Aid scheme, at no cost to yourself. So if you donate items to us which are sold for £20, this will actually be worth £25 to us if you sign up for Gift Aid.
Take a look at our Retail Gift Aid page for more information.
Looking for the perfect gift for a charity shop enthusiast? Acorns charity shops sell and accept the Charity Shop Gift Card, the first multi-retailer gift card that can be used exclusively in charity shops.
The cards are recyclable and compostable and can also be purchased at www.thecharityshopgiftcard.co.uk, and through retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Asda, Boots and WHSmith for use in Acorns shops.
At Acorns Children’s Hospice, we do everything we can to support families like Hugh’s. When the unimaginable happens we are here, helping families who are caring for life limited and life threatened children to feel safe, and making sure they know they don’t have to take this journey alone. Learn more about what this means through Hugh’s story, told by his mum, Emma.
Whether you’re looking for a family day out, an adventurous challenge or a local event, there’s something for everyone.
One of the easiest ways to support our vital work is to donate clothes, toys, books, furniture and more to be sold in our shops.
Together we can create a place where local children will get the specialist care they need for generations to come.
