How volunteering helped Retail volunteer Cameron find his confidence

For Cameron Lovell, joining Acorns as a Retail volunteer at Acorns Harborne superstore came with a few nerves. But any worries he had soon disappeared thanks to the friendly welcome from the Harborne retail team.

“Everyone was really friendly and helpful when I joined,” Cameron said. “When I first started, I wasn’t sure what to do, but everyone was there to calm my nerves.”

Now, around a year into his volunteering journey, Cameron has some simple advice for anyone feeling nervous about taking that first step. “Just join! You’ll make lots of new friends. Everyone is really friendly and there to help you.”

A warm and positive place

When asked, Cameron said it was the atmosphere at Acorns that made him want to continue his journey here. “It’s a really warm, positive environment, everyone makes you feel welcome”.

Since joining, Cameron has noticed a big change in himself too: “Acorns has definitely improved my confidence. I’m talking to people all the time.”

For Cameron, volunteering is not only about giving his time. It’s also about the people he meets and the connections he makes along the way.

Volunteering that fits around you

Outside of Acorns, Cameron enjoys playing darts (proudly sharing he went five years undefeated) and landscape gardening.

“Having hobbies and other commitments doesn’t have to stop someone from volunteering,” Cameron says.

“Acorns is really flexible, so you can pick and choose the hours that work for you and discuss these with your manager. You can volunteer as little or as often as you want.”

You’re never on your own

And for anyone who mind find some aspects of the role intimidating, Cameron says: “The team will always support you, there’s always someone on hand to help.”

Still nervous about volunteering? Cameron’s advice is simple: “Do it. It’s a very rewarding opportunity.”

Looking to the future, Cameron hopes to continue volunteering with Acorns while enjoying his passion for landscape gardening.

Cameron’s story shows that sometimes the hardest part is simply taking the first step. From growing in confidence to meeting new people, volunteering can bring unexpected rewards.
